Circular Economy Hackathon

2 - 4 September 2016

Trade and Sustainability are separate topics within our established and incumbent linear economic model. However, in a Circular Economy, these two concepts are intimately intertwined if not entirely inseparable. At Eccentrade we recognize the opportunities of utilizing digital technologies to drive the future circular economy. We also believe that information will be an important resource within this new economic paradigm. In this hackathon you will be challenged to help develop new innovative ideas and prototypes that bridge Trade and Sustainability and help map the future circular economy and each company's position within it.

This hackathon requires a multi-disciplinary approach and teams. We are looking for data scientists, developers, visualisation and UI experts as well industrial ecologists and/or environmental scientists. We have four main categories for Hacker Profiles.

Hacker Profiles

  • Data Junkie

You have a background in computer science and applications, modelling, statistics, analytics and math. Machine learning, data scraping and text mining are toys you enjoy playing with.

  • Graph Guru

You have a background in UX design, data visualisation and understand the way people internalise information. Creating infographics and interactive visualisations of complex data structures excites you.

  • DevOp Dude/Diva

You get sh*t done! What others dream about, you can develop. Nothing is impossible for you with a CLI and a internet connection, and you are eager to sink your teeth into a new challenge. Check out what we work with at

  • Eco Expert

Your drive is to create a more sustainable world. You understand the challenges and opportunities surrounding concepts such as Circular Economy. Material Flow Analysis, Life Cycle Assessments, etc are central within your arsenal of tools.

What is the challenge?

How can you use data to stimulate the formation of synergistic relationships between companies in order to facilitate the transition toward a circular economy?

All teams are asked to address this central research question, however, participants are free to refine this question or narrow the scope as they see fit. The following subquestions may help to further refine the hackathon parameters:

  • How can you create a Sustainability Report for every company in the Netherlands (the world) based on open data?
  • How can you create a Trade Report for every company in the Netherlands (the world) based on open data?
  • How can you visualise Trade Data, Supply Chains, Waste Flows and/or Product Cycles?
  • How can you visualize Sustainability Data?
  • What open-data sources can be matched/linked to closed datasets that can help answer the main research question?
  • To what degree can AI and/or machine learning help decipher the data and provide useful insights into facilitating synergies?

  • What do you get out of this?

Your success during this 48 hour hackathon can mean more than finding new friends, a gold medal or a cash prize. We are a rapidly growing start-up specialising in aggregating and analysing corporate data. With big data, comes big responsibility and we want to use our data to help steer companies toward a more sustainable future. If this sounds like something that intrigues you and something you want to be a part of, then this hackathon will be the most fun job or internship application you will ever do. As an intern you will be able to link your thesis project to a hands-on project with real world applications. If you are a recent graduate and in search for a job with the skills that we seek, then this hackathon will be your opportunity to get to know us in person. If you are a serial hacker in need of a purposeful challenge, then this hackathon will be for you too!
